After more than 2 decades, I recently decided to return to playing the piano. We bought a great entry-level digital piano with weighted keys and I was pleasantly surprised to see how quickly some of what I had learned as a child has come back. Right now I'm playing very basic songs, but goal is to eventually learn Fly by Ludovico Einaudi. You can check out this awesome song by clicking here.
In 2014 took up the ukulele, which was my first string instrument. I chose the ukulele because it's a fairly easy instrument to learn and it's very portable. I started by taking a class at a community centre, and then at a ukulele school. I'm now taking a break from lessons, but continue to enjoy playing at home on my own. I have a fabulous song book that I bought from the Vancouver Ukulele circle which makes learning new songs fun and relatively easy. My favourite song to play is Tonight You Belong to Me and the artist I'm most inspired by is Vance Joy - most notably his songs Play with Fire and Snaggletooth. One day, I hope to find myself sitting on a beach killing it on the ukulele looking as cool as Vance does here.
When I was in Ghana, I met a Djembe drumming circle while waiting for a bus one day. They offered me a ride and I ended up joining their circle and learning to play. Before I left Ghana, they helped me to buy a drum with my favourite Ghanaian symbols carved into it. I am by no means a proficient drummer, but it sure is fun to wail away on that thing.
